Order of Performance
Based on the hymn tunes VICTORY, HANNOVER and EASTER HYMN, the handbell
score has been revised and expanded especially for this concert.[p>
This work takes the listener on a meditative walk through Bay View at the first light
of day, then breaks into an energetic jog.
Based on Es ist ein Ros entsprungen (Lo, How a Rose), VENI, VENI, EMMANUEL and
PICARDY, the piece was commissioned by The Raleigh Ringers.
As the dedication states, “this is a tale of thunder, snow, and the valiant ringers who
faced them head on”, all on one chilly Christmas morning. Bundle up!
Joseph Parry’s 1897 hymn tune has been beautifully set for handbells and violin,
perfectly portraying the desire for peace amidst the turmoil shared in the lyrics.
Fasten your seatbelts as we go for a wild ride in search of rejuvenation, new
beginnings, and spiritual awakenings. This will be the work’s first performance!
Intermission
Some serious sleight of hand will be necessary to perform this sonic tribute to the
art of magic in all of its compositional elements and forms.
This intimate musical poem is possibly Don Allured’s most performed piece due to
its sheer beauty. The deceptively simple texture calls for exquisite musical shaping.
Winner of the 20th Anniversary Composition Contest for Twin Cities Bronze, the
immensity of space is captured through the expansive harmonic movement.
Amidst the dramatic storyline of the opera “Carmen”, Bizet inserted this serenely
poetic moment prior to Act 3, assigning the expressive melody to the flute.
Inspired by a chance meeting with a woman in St. Louis who was lamenting her
husband’s lengthy absence, W.C. Handy composed this jazz standard in 1914.
No punches were pulled in arranging this 1982 hit song which purposely mirrors the
timing of the boxing moves in the film Rocky III. It will be a knock-out concert finale.
As is our tradition, we will sing this choral benediction along with the audience.
